The Great Mother and New Father Conference — 2008 —Nobleboro, Maine

Workshop descriptions:

The Art of Intimacy:  Listening with the Ears of the Heart, Halima & Abraham Sussman

The path of human relationship can lead us into heavenly bliss or a tortured hell. It depends on how we orient ourselves and what deep listening capacities we cultivate in our relationships in developing our ability to hear and recognize the true soul voice of our friend. In this experiential workshop we will integrate meditation and concentration practices with dyadic exercises to explore our growing edge in listening to others, as a foundation for developing intimacy, trust and friendship.

Halima and Abraham may also lead an evening program, incorporating sacred movement, zhirk practice, and dances of universal peace, with the goal of growing community and connection.

Halima & Abraham Sussman, life partners for 36 years, have worked extensively with couples and families, incorporating music, meditation and sacred movement into their psychotherapy practice.

A Gypsy Wagon Full of Dreams:  Art and Dreams, Tom Verner & Janet Fredericks

Drawing on our dream images, we will each create a handmade book illuminated with
words and images.  Participants will be invited to work with the playful medium of
book making to explore and express images that come up from the well of  the creative
imagination.  Materials supplied and you can bring your own.  No art making experience
necessary.

Authentic Movement: Susan Schell

Authentic Movement is a contemplative movement practice where the dancer moves eyes-closed in the presence of a non-judgemental witness. The intention of the mover is to focus inwardly, first to listen and then to follow the body's impulses toward movement or stillness. These impulses may come in the form of sensations, images, memories, or even characters that spontaneously arise from the imagination. They  may move quietly, persistently through our bodies or charge through us with a compelling force, calling forth our vigorous attention. But however they arrive, they come bringing news from our unconscious, that messy, challenging, delicious realm within. Bring journals to write/draw in if you have them.

Susan Schell has taught and performed dance throughout the US and abroad. She has been on the faculty of several programs for the study of Authentic Movement and has periodically served as adjunct faculty in dance at the University of Maine. Her writings and drawings have been published in the Contact Quarterly, a dance magazine, and in A Moving Journal, a publication exploring themes related to the practice and study of Authentic Movement. She has also been a contributing editor for the journal. She lives in Chesterville, Maine.
